How to Tackle Mold in Southwest Florida

One of the most common questions we receive is, "How do I prevent & manage mold in South Florida?". It's understandable.

Here in Southwest Florida, humidity runs high and heavy rain and major storms occur year-round. The potential for water damage (and mold growth) is always present.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help prevent mold in your home. Below are a few of our top tips:

‣ Control humidity in your home. This is essential, and you can do this by setting your thermostat to Auto, replacing your filters regularly, using a dehumidifier and lowering the temperature inside your home.

‣ Prevent water leaks and mitigate damage. Prevention is best way. Once water intrusion occurs, if wet or damp areas are dried within 24-48 hours, in most cases mold will not grow. But you must act quickly. ⠀

‣ Checking for leaks or damage after major storms, especially in high-risk areas like drain pans, drain lines, A/C units, roofs, bathrooms, sinks, etc. Regular storm checks are an important way to identify water damage and respond to the potential threat with a repair.

Almost 66% percent of residents in Naples and Marco Island are seasonal. This poses an added challenge when it comes to mold prevention. Seasonal residents head back north each summer (some leaving 6 months at a time or more), and as we say, an unoccupied home is an at-risk home.
